3 best tips for stone chip repairs that can save you money!

Here in Montreal, traveling by car isn’t the easiest. The roads are filled with rocks and potholes that can cause damages to your car such as tire pressure dropping, alignment of the wheels and most importantly stone chips. When a rock hits a windshield hard, it doesn’t shatter but the impact leaves a pocket of air because all windshields are laminated. Laminated is a type of glass that doesn’t shatter because it consists of 2 layers of glass and in between their plastic that creates an extreme bond together for safety.

Making your windshield 10 times stronger

Driving in Montreal is no joke. With all the daily commuters going to work add the construction throughout the city and the traffic, it gets quite stressful. And when you end up receiving a stone chip, it doesn’t make it better. Luckily, At Vite Vitres Jacques, we are always up to date we our products and tools for our clients. With our new product : Diamon-Fusion® Not only we’ll make your windshield clearer, we’ll also improve it’s resistance to impacts by up to 10 times!

The difference between treated and untreated Windshield after rock impact

You’re probably asking yourself how does it work. It’s 3 step procedure that’s takes about half an hour to apply but definitely. First we decontaminated the windshield which will remove any old products such as Rainex or Aquapel. Then we apply 2 separate coats of the  Diamon-Fusion® product which will make the windshield surface smoother and even which will increase it’s resistance.

The science behind the magic

Diamon-Fusion® will also improve visibility. Not only does this make your windshield stronger, it also repels water and dust away. Specially when driving over 40km/h, the wind itself will push the water without using your wipers.

We highly recommend applying our new product on your windshield specially if we’re installing a new one. This is one of many reasons why we, at Vite Vitres Jacques, make your driving a bit more enjoyable!

What are Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)

Technology in our world has never been more essential as part of our daily lives. Whether it’s for getting news updates, messaging your friends and family almost instantly or for traveling. Millions of people are on the road every day for their daily routine but with the amount of accidents happening on the road, the car industry has been stepping up and bringing technology that not only may help save the lives of the passengers but also for bystanders.

In recent years, they have slowly integrated Advanced Driver Assitance Systems (ADAS). These systems vary depending on car manufacturers and their models. Here’s a list of some of the most common systems :
  • Forward Collision Warning (FCW)
  • Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
  • Lane Keep Assist (LKA)
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
  • Night vision
  • Automatic Parking
Most accidents on the road are human error and manufacturers are slowly bringing these systems for safety and better driving. All of these new technologies are being installed directly on to vehicle’s windshields and by 2022, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has agreed with car companies to make these systems standard on 99% of the cars in the US. While they’re just starting to add these safety technologies, here’s some of the rest they would like to add in the near future :
  • Driver Drowsiness System
  • Emergency driver System
  • Traffic Sign Recognition
  • Pedestrian Detection
As the world keeps spinning, the technology is expanding rapidly in cars and who knows what’s next. One thing is certain, the cost of windshields aren’t going down.

3 Reasons why there’s a black band and dots around your windshield

3 Reasons why there’s a black band and dots around your windshield

Whenever you examine your car or when you’re stuck in traffic, you probably have noticed a black band or dots around your windshield. If you’ve ever questioned yourself  if they ever actually have a purpose, here are the main reasons why the windshield frit line is necessary.

While the inward of the frit line aids the bond between the glass and the frame, the outward blocks the UV rays from harming the urethane which would cause damage to the bond over time.

And last, the dots around the windshield gives the frit line an aesthetic transition instead of an end right after the black band. But some windshields also have extra dots added on the top part of the windshield near the mirror called “third visor”. They help the driver by blocking the sun at certain angles if the visor above the head cannot do so.

The frit line is the black band that goes all around the windshield. The urethane that holds the glass to the frame is bonded on the frit line which gives it better adhesion to the glass. At our shop, we apply a primer on the inward side of the frit line to enhance the bond between the glass and the urethane.

4 Tips for your windshield during winter

When winter strikes Montreal, it’s relentless! You’ve got to wake up earlier to make sure you get be on time whether i’s dropping off the kids to school, going to your daily commute or even going to your chalet during the weekend. All of his while heating up your car and shovelling the snow off around your car. With these tips, we’ll make sure you’ll save some of your precious time and money during the cold mornings!

1. Warm up your car before driving off right away!

We know this one may sound obvious but a lot of people tend to rush home after work or going somewhere urgent and they don’t take the time to warm up the car! In cold temperatures, driving off with your car as soon as you start it can be harmful in the long run especially for cars that have turbos. In any car, you should at least warm it up at least 30 seconds to make sure the car is in good running condition. Pro Tip : You can use this time to clean off the extra snow of your headlights/taillights/plate not only for your visibility and for the drivers around you, but because cops can also amend tickets for these reasons!

2. Don’t use your wipers or your scraper to remove the frost or ice on you glasses!

Probably the worst part of winter, is scraping the ice off your windshield or other windows! Do not use your wipers to take off the ice as it can damage the blade and you’d need to change them quicker than average. Using your scraper or credit card is also bad because it can potentially scratch your windshield and bother your vision. You can mix in a bottle 1 part water and 2 part alcohol (you can also do this with 2 teaspoon of table salt). Spray the mixture on your car and watch it easily take off the ice or frost with no damage!

3. Never use boiling water

The incredibly hot temperature of the water and the cold weather together is a disaster for you windshield. The stress it put on it can easily break it costing you hundreds to change it. Instead, put the heating off your car towards the windshield! It’s sufficient enough to remove the frost slowly while your shovelling the snow off your driveway!

4. Using proper wipers and cleaning them

Yes, there’s proper wipers to use during winter. Some have whole in them for example like the rainex ones which traps the ice in between so not only is it tough clean, it makes the wipers not function properly because it loses it’s flexibility! We recommend goodyear wipers because not only are they american made, they’re flexible and incredibly easy to clean to provide you with the most visibility on stormy commutes! Pro Tip #2 : Wipers should be changed twice a year as their effectiveness don’t last long.

Kia Niro 2021 review: EV Sport

First up there’s something you should know about the Kia Niro. It’s not new. At least, not globally. You see, the Niro has been around in other markets as long as its Hyundai Kona relation, dating way back to 2016, and even the electric version has been available in its Korean home market since 2018.

The car which arrives here is a 2020 facelift of a car which is now five years old, and there are areas in which you can tell. The most obvious giveaway is the lack of the new Kia badge on this car’s nose or steering wheel, but it’s reflected on the spec sheet in less than impressive areas.

Wearing an MSRP of a whopping $70,990, the Niro EV is by no means cheap either as a small SUV or as an electric car. Even the freshly facelifted Hyundai Kona Electric ($66,000) comes in nearly $5000 less in its most expensive form, and in this spec the Niro is even more expensive than its key Tesla Model 3 rival, which offers comparative range and amazing technology.

Frustratingly, the standard equipment is also lower than the Kona Electric, with the Niro lacking things like a wireless phone charger, holographic display, heated seats, or a fully customisable digital dash cluster.

This is important for an electric car, too, because heated seats are more than just a luxury; they are an energy efficient way of warming up the car’s occupants. The Kona Electric not only gets them for the front seat, but in the rear seats, too! To add insult to injury, the EV only gets single-zone climate control.

It’s not all bad news though, as elsewhere there’s some decent stuff. I like the fully integrated 10.25-inch multimedia screen, which comes complete with sat nav, digital radio, and the expected phone connectivity (even if it is wired instead of wireless), and while the digital dashboard isn’t as sleek and customisable as the Hyundai unit, it looks neat.

Elsewhere the Niro EV Sport scores an eight-speaker premium audio system, keyless entry and push-start ignition, 17-inch ‘aerodynamic’ alloy wheels clad in Michelin Primacy 3 tyres, synthetic leather interior trim, LED headlights with auto high beams, and an auto dimming rear vision mirror.

The safety suite is decent, too, and will be looked at later in this review. So, on the value front it’s not great. You get everything a modern car needs, but it’s puzzling there are some major omissions compared to the more affordable and longer-range Kona Electric.

Toyota’s new all-electric bZ4X

Toyota early June confirmed its new “bZ” electric vehicle brand, for “Beyond Zero,” and the first model under it, the bZ4X Concept, will be hitting Canadian dealerships sooner than you might expect.

Jointly developed with Subaru, the new bZ4X will go on sale globally in mid-2022, riding on an all-new, dedicated electric vehicle (EV) platform. Toyota Canada said it will be roughly the same size as the RAV4, and all-wheel-drive.

Globally, Toyota plans to expand to some 70 electrified models by 2025, including hybrids and plug-in hybrids; and 15 of those will be new, battery-only EVs.

While very little information was given for the bZ4X, the company did say it rides on a battery platform known as e-TNGA, and will have a long wheelbase, short overhangs, an open-concept interior, and optimal interior space. It will initially be built in Japan, but the company will look at other assembly locations if there’s enough demand for it.

Toyota Canada also confirmed that the new, second-generation Mirai hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle will go on sale in Canada for the 2022 model year, after launching as a 2021 in the United States. The new model has a smaller and lighter fuel cell; it’s rear-wheel-drive, rather than front-wheel as on the previous one; it now holds five instead of four occupants; and it has a longer wheelbase and new styling.

We might have gotten it earlier, but hydrogen refuelling stations are few and far between in Canada. Toyota said it will sell “wherever there is hydrogen,” which right now is primarily British Columbia and Quebec, but “it will go to other provinces” when refuelling infrastructure is available.

Hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles use ambient air and onboard hydrogen to create electricity, which is used to power their electric motors for driving. They emit no emissions other than water vapour, but some hydrogen supplies can be “greener” than others, depending on how it’s made. Toyota said it takes about five minutes to refuel the Mirai with hydrogen.

Some hydrogen vehicles have been available only by lease, but Toyota Canada said the 2022 Mirai will likely be for sale as well. It will have at least two trim levels, including a top-line Limited, and will have new cabin styling from the last-generation model, an available panoramic sunroof, and a suite of driving safety assists.

The new Mirai has an improved fuel cell system and increased hydrogen storage, and has a projected 30-per-cent range increase over the last-generation model. Pricing and full specs will be announced closer to launch.
